He was born in Kalamata on December 30, 1947 and he is a licensed topographical engineer. He has served Greece's public life from 1979 until 2007 as mayor, member of Parliament and minister. Georgios Kouroupos

Nurtured in a musical environment, George Kouroupos studied music at the Conservatory of Athens (1953-1965, piano diploma). After his graduation from the Athens University School of Mathematics (BA, 1967) he composed his first major work, Antiphonies, based on texts from the David's psalms VI, XXII, XLVI. Between 1968-1972 he studied with Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire . George Kouroupos has a remarkable activity in various administrative positions: deputy director of the Third Program of the Greek National Radio (1977-81), president of the Greek National Opera (1982-84/1994-99), director of the music department of Kalamata's Municipal Cultural Development Enterprise (1985-1990) and Artistic Director of the Orchestra of Colors (1995-2010)...

Professor emer. of Classical Archaeology at the University of Athens. Correspondent member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Paris, and the Oesterreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Vienna. Member of the German and the Austrian Archaeological Institutes. He directs works of restoration and presentation in the Epidaurian sanctuaries of Apollon Maleatas and Asklepios, as well as in the ancient city of Naxos and in the sanctuaries of Dionysos in Yria and of Demeter in Sangri in the same island. He won the first price of Europa Nostra for the excavation and the enhancement of the archaeological sites in Naxos (2003)...
