Build against the slope, the outline of its cavea is still recognizable. The seats of white limestone and red porphyry were destroyed between  1927-1937. Two seats that escaped destruction have been placed in the cavea. In antiquity the riverbed was channeled through this area by rock retaining walls such as may be seen still partly upright farther south. During the festivals a wooden orchestra floor must have covered this wide channel. In late antiquity the ancient channel was converted into an underground concrete culvert. This was restored after the excavation to protect the ruins from further destruction by the swollen winter stream. Above the ancient cavea the visitor saw the Nike of Samothrace and the southern end of the Stoa.

  • The archaeological research at the ancient theatre of Samothrace has been completed by the Curator Mr Dimitris Matsas.
  • On Sunday 25 April 2010 the first visit took place of the president of the ‘DIAZOMA’ Association, Mr. Stavros Benos, to the ancient theatre of Samothrace, in the framework of his tour of the ancient theatres and auditoriums of Samothrace, where he met with all local agencies regarding the promotion of the theatre of Samothrace.
  • ‘DIAZOMA’ then opened a “piggy bank” (a bank account) for the ancient theatre of Samothrace. (link)
  • In September 2013 ‘DIAZOMA assigned the work ‘Enlarging the potential of 3D Laser Scanners in monument documentation: drafting 3D models of the ancient theatres in Abdera and Samothrace’, with funding from the Bodossaki Foundation.
  • A topographical survey must be drafted, as well as a plan for the restoration of the earthen koilon, as well as a functional connection of the monument with the broader archaeological site. (CURRENTLY)
  • Incorporation of the programme for the restoration of the theatre and its functional connection to the broader archaeological space to a funding programme. (MOVING FORWARD)
