The theater’s location was identified in 1887 by archaeologist A. Milchhoefer.

Excavations were performed in 1888-1889 by the American School of Archeology under the archaeologist C.D.Buck, who revealed the temple of Pythian Apollo, buildings on the northeast side of the area, a semicircular monument for the donors, platforms for votives, reliefs and inscriptions, as well as the remains of the theater. These remains and especially the inscription reading “ΙΚΑΡΙΩΝ ΤΟ ΠΥΘΙΟΝ” (The Pythion of Ikarians) at the threshold of the temple of Apollo led archaeologists to identify the location as the religious and administrative center of the ancient municipality of Ikaria.

In 1981 the American School of Archeology under archaeologist W.R.Biers conducted extensive cleaning works in the area.

In 2006, restoration work was completed in the semicircular monument of donors by the 2nd EPCA, and the monument was restored in all of its height

Excavations - Interventions

The theater’s location was identified in 1887 by archaeologist A. Milchhoefer.

Excavations were performed in 1888-1889 by the American School of Archeology under the archaeologist C.D.Buck, who revealed the temple of Pythian Apollo, buildings on the northeast side of the area, a semicircular monument for choregoi, platforms for votives, reliefs and inscriptions, as well as the remains of the theater.

In 1981 the American School of Archeology under archaeologist W.R. Biers conducted extensive cleaning works in the area.

In 2006, restoration work was completed in the semicircular monument for choregoi by the Ephorate of Antiquities of East Attica and the monument was restored in all of its height.
