On Friday, February 22, 2019 at 18:00, an event will be held in the amphitheater Alkis Argyriadis of the central building of the University of Athens during which the recently founded INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF ANCIENT ASCLEPIEIA will be presented to the public.
This network was created in October 2018 by the municipalities of Epidaurus, Cos and Trikala with the participation of the Ministry of Culture, the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Hippocratic Foundation of Cos. As a first step, the municipalities of Athens, Rome, Marseille and Pafos will be invited to join the network.
The network aims at promoting at an international level (a) research on ancient Asclepieia, ancient medicine and its messages to the modern world, (b) exchanges of specialists, knowledge and experience on the subject, (c) actions demonstrating the value of Asκlepiοs’ legacy and d) medical and quality tourism through the promotion of cultural heritage.
Professor Jacques Jouanna, member of the French “Académie des inscriptions and belles-lettres”, expert in ancient medicine and specialist of Hippocrates will speak on the theme “The network of Asclepieia in classical Greece, the medicine of Asklepios and the medicine of the Asclepiades”. Charalampos Papageorgiou, professor at the University of Athens, will ask the question “Is the reconsideration of Asκlepiοs’ legacy in our interest?”
