This is the story of an impressive 4th c. B.C. choregic monument, whose Stuart and Revett 18thcentury drawings inspired ‘Greek Revival’ buildings in Europe and North America, its conversion into the Middle Byzantine period church of ‘St Mary of the Cave’, its bombardment damage in 1827 and its recent full restoration in 2017 by the speaker.
