“Integrated programme for the environmental enhancement of the wider area of the Epidaurus Asclepieion”

How did the worship of gods and nature lead to healing? How did doctors and patients at this great “Health Centre” of Antiquity live? The Archaeological and Environmental Park of the Epidaurus Asclepieion showcases one of the most mystical and universal aspects of ancient civilization in an experiential manner. In doing so, it becomes an example of inspired synergies and integrated territorial development.

The “Integrated programme for the environmental enhancement of the wider area of the Epidaurus Asclepieion” aims to enhance and promote the authentic image of the monument complex of the Epidaurus Asclepieion. It will offer visitors a unique experience: to become acquainted with and experience what an Asclepieion was and how it operated in antiquity. Visitors will also be able to understand how the worship of the gods and elements of nature (location, climate, flora, fauna, and water as key healing factors) combined with the development of medical science.

The programme’s design and implementation are the product of a long process of synergies between multiple stakeholders: The Municipality of Epidaurus, the Region of the Peloponnese, the Ministry of Culture, the Argolis Ephorate of Antiquities, the Ministry of Development and Investments, the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the “DIAZOMA” Association and its members and corporate members, the ASCLEPIADES Non-Profit Organization.

The idea for an environmental and archaeological park for the Epidaurus Asclepieion stems from the vision of Mr. Vasilis Lambrinoudakis, Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology and General Secretary of the DIAZOMA Association.
