Ancient Theatre of Hersonissos Local Cultural Route

A life of twenty centuries and countless adventures: The Roman theatre of Hersonissos on the island of Crete started out as a performance space, became an unofficial quarry, and has now entered a renovation and enhancement programme that will usher it into a new, creative stage in its life.

On 13 December 2018, the inclusion of the restoration of the Roman Theatre of Hersonnisos in the local Community-led Local Development programme was announced. The inclusion came following a proposal by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion to the Heraklion Development Agency within the framework of the “Invitation by the Region of Crete for the submission of Community-led Local Development strategies within the framework of axis 5 (ESF) of the OP ‘Crete’ 2014-2020”.

Budget

The total budget made available amounts to 2,225,879.80 euros. For the theatre’s restoration and enhancement programme, a budget of 549,674.55 euros has been approved. Thanks to this funding, the study for the restoration of the Roman theatre of Hersonnisos approved by the Central Archaeological Council can be implemented. The theatre restoration proposal includes the repair and maintenance of fragile elements of the monument and the protection of the seats and their fragile foundations so that the theatre may be used selectively.
